World's 2nd Richest Man Saved Honda F1 Racing
- Damon Hill
Honda will be present on the starting grid in 2009 after the Formula One team was rescued by the world’s second richest man.
Italian newspaper La Stampa has reported that Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has ploughed his cash into the ailing firm after they announced earlier this month that they would withdraw from F1 due to the global financial crisis.
The newspaper did not name its source but claimed that Jenson Button and rookie Bruno Senna would represent the team next year, with veteran Rubens Barrichello as expected dropping out.
"The news is not official as all the details have yet to be formalised," said the paper. "But two things are certain - the team has been saved and the drivers will be Jenson Button and rookie Bruno Senna."
Honda had a disappointing year, finishing ninth in the constructors championship with just 14 points, but the announcement of their withdrawal still came as a shock.
The Japanese company first competed in F1 in 1964 with the latest of its three Grand Prix wins coming via Button’s success in Hungary in 2006.
Motorsport in Japan has already been hit by the financial slowdown with Subaru and Suzuki pulling out of the world rally championship.

Nicole Buffett - What She Said
That documentary appearance featured Nicole Buffett saying “I’ve been very blessed to have my education taken care of, and I have had my living expenses taken care of while I’m in school”.
However, Buffett’s remarks didn’t go well with Warren.
Marie Claire did a report on Nicole this month and states that no one in the Buffett family had ever spoken that frank, that publicly, about their living arrangements.
Warren Buffet was not pleased.
Nicole would reportedly then appear on Oprah and say “It would be nice to be involved with creating things for others with that money and to be involved in it. I feel completely excluded from it.”
Thereafter Warren sent her a letter.
“People will react to you based on that ‘fact’ rather than who you are or what you have accomplished. I have not emotionally or legally adopted you as a grandchild, nor have the rest of my family adopted you as a niece or a cousin.”
Vegas Hits By Freak Snowstorm In 30 Years
Shut out all of your past except that which will help you weather your tomorrows. - Sir William Osler
The ongoing snowstorm has stopped flights from landing or leaving at McCarran International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
"No planes are departing for Las Vegas from anywhere in the U.S. right now," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.
Gregor said the airport doesn’t have snow removal or deicing equipment, which means there’s no way for snow-covered planes to leave safely.
"The forecast is not looking particularly promising for anybody who wants to fly into Las Vegas," he said.
Officials at McCarran International Airport say there have still been some arrivals since snow started falling in Las Vegas, although departures from other airports to Las Vegas have been stopped for the time being.
"McCarran International Airport is not closed. In the last hour, the airport has handled 14 arrivals and zero take-offs," airport officials said in a written statement. "Normal flight operations will resume once the inclement weather has improved."
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a winter storm warning for heavy snow for the valleys and deserts of Clark, southern Nye and Lincoln counties until 6 a.m. Thursday.
John Adair, a meterologist with the National Weather Service’s Las Vegas office, said as of 2:30 p.m. the entire Las Vegas Valley was receiving either snow or sleet.
“This is a very rare snow event,” Adair said.
Snow is expected to accumulate on the valley floors across Clark and southern Lincoln counties. Snow will continue to fall through the afternoon and tonight before tapering off Thursday morning.
This storm is expected to bring 3 to 6 inches of snow to the valley floors and up to 10 inches to the foothills above 2500 feet.
Icy conditions are resulting in major road closures in Southern Nevada.
Interstate 15 was closed at 1:30 p.m. in each direction at Primm due to snow and icy conditions, the Nevada Department of Transportation announced.
U.S. Highway 95 was closed from Railroad Pass to state Route 163, the Laughlin turnoff.
Chains, snow tires, or four wheel drive vehicle restrictions are in place for Mountain Springs and Mount Charleston.
The transportation department announced at 2:30 p.m. that state routes 163, 164 and 165 have been closed in both directions due to the weather.
State Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump was closed as well. Motorists who must go to Pahrump are being advised to head north on U.S. Highway 95 to Indian Springs and then south on state Route 160.
Transportation Department Spokesman Bob McKenzie said motorists are being advised to stay in Las Vegas if possible.
The Nevada Department of Transportation plans on using a liquid deicer called magnesium-chloride on the part of the valley’s freeway system tonight, McKenzie said. The liquid will be spread over bridges and viaducts and areas most likely to freeze on Interstate 15 and U.S. Highway 95, McKenzie said.
State Route 159 is being plowed and remained open as of 3 p.m.
Because of travel conditions, Henderson employees were sent home from work at 3 p.m., city officials announced. Emergency operations will continue and public safety and public works employees are on call.

Shoe Attack On President Already Turned Into A Crappy Flash Game
Source: kotaku dot com
As hilarious and .gif worthy the incident was yesterday that saw an Iraqi journalist chucking his shoes at President Bush, did we really need a flash game? Apparently so.
The company T-Enterprise must be quick with their flash programming (or they knew about the incident beforehand!), because in less than 24 hours they managed to churn out a game (albeit a crappy one) where you must defend the President from shoes being thrown his way.
"If you watch the video clip, the Secret Service don't move to protect the President until the second shoe has been thrown," said Sadi Chishti, managing director of T-Enterprise, the Glasgow-based company behind the computer game. "We're hoping the agents will use this game as a training aid for future footwear attacks on world leaders."
Rather than batting the shoes down with your arms or hands, though, the game makes you shoot the shoes, with a good chance at hitting the President. Game Politics noted that was probably by design. I have to be honest, the first time I played it I unloaded into the President thinking that was the objective. WHOOPS!
You can play this "game" after the jump!
Barack Obama Named Physics Nobel Prize Winner Steven Chu As His Energy Secretary
"If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos." - Edward O. Wilson
The US president-elect said the new administration’s priorities were to end US dependence on foreign oil and fight climate change.
Naming his environment team, he said US energy dependence had grown even as global resources were disappearing.
Mr Obama has pledged to make big changes in environmental policies.
After eight years, he said, the US could not accept more broken promises when the new administration took over on 20 January.
Despite the current economic crisis, the president-elect has vowed to make the environment a priority with an ambitious promise of creating 2.5m new jobs, says the BBC’s Andy Gallacher in Washington.
Announcing his environment team at a press conference on Monday, Mr Obama vowed to "move beyond our oil addiction and create a new hybrid economy".
"All of us know the problems that are rooted in our addiction to foreign oil," he said. "It constrains our economy, shifts wealth to hostile regimes and leaves us dependent on unstable regions."
He said these "urgent dangers" were only eclipsed by the long-term threat of climate change.
"Unless we act, [climate change] will lead to drought and famine abroad, devastating weather patterns and terrible storms on our shores and the disappearance of our coastline," said Mr Obama.
He added that there were boundless opportunities to create new jobs in the environmental industry.
Trapping atoms
The energy secretary-elect is an energy specialist and the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Ms Jackson would be the EPA’s first African-American administrator
Dr Chu is a leader in the field of combating climate change using scientific methods.
He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize for physics for his work on cooling and trapping atoms using laser light.
Announcing his environment team nominations, Mr Obama named Lisa Jackson, currently the chief of staff for New Jersey’s governor, as head of the environment protection agency (EPA).
Ms Jackson, who also worked for the EPA under Mr Clinton in the 1990s, would be the agency’s first African-American administrator.
Mr Obama said Carol Browner, the former head of the EPA under Bill Clinton, would co-ordinate White House policy on energy and climate change.
He also named Nancy Sutley, a deputy mayor of Los Angeles, as head of the White House council on environmental quality.

Top 10 All Time NFL Defensive Teams
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense went into Sunday’s game in Baltimore ranked first in the NFL in every major category.
Sixty minutes later, it had held the Ravens to nine points and had surrendered only 202 yards. Sunday was Pittsburgh’s 14th consecutive game holding an opponent to less than 300 yards, tying the 1973 Rams for the longest such streak to start a season.
Clearly the Steelers have the best defense in the NFL this season. But where do they rank all time? Here’s a look at my top 10.
10. 1990 New York Giants: Like all great defenses, the ’90 Giants were solid against the run and the pass. But they also had the ability to send the great Lawrence Taylor after the quarterback. And Taylor also had the great idea to send female escorts after the quarterback.
9. 1991 Philadelphia Eagles: Reggie White, Jerome Brown and Clyde Simmons led a dominant Eagles defense that for years had been accused of taking bounties on opposing players. The ’91 Eagles went 10-6 but missed the playoffs, and for some reason the defense never thought to take a bounty on Eagles quarterbacks Pat Ryan, Brad Goebel, Jeff Kemp and Jim McMahon.
8. 1973 Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins went undefeated in 1972, but most people forget that in ’73 they won the Super Bowl again and set an NFL record by allowing only 150 points in the entire 14-game season. To this day, they pop champagne any time an NFL team plays its 15th game of the season.
7. 1971 Minnesota Vikings: The motto of The Purple People Eaters was "Meet at the quarterback." Or, wait … maybe it was "Meat at the quarterback." Ahh! Cannibals!
6. 1962 Green Bay Packers: The ’62 Packers’ defense boasted five future Hall of Famers and surrendered just 10.8 points per game -- or four fewer than the 2008 Packers allow per quarter.
5. 1969 Kansas City Chiefs: Hank Stram’s "triple stack" defense allowed an average of less than two touchdowns per game in 1969 and gave up only 20 points on the way to victory in Super Bowl IV. Since then, other teams have used players who are big proponents of the Triple Stack, but to less success.
4. 2000 Baltimore Ravens: Ray Lewis and Rod Woodson led a defense that allowed the fewest points and rushing yards in NFL history during a 16-game season. So overwhelming and intimidating was the presence of the Ravens’ defense that it often managed to keep its own offense scoreless, too.
3. 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers have the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL this season across the board. But they need their own nickname. "The Steel Curtain" was the ’70s Steelers. Using it again is like being a cover band. Or even worse: a cover band of a hair band.
2. 1985 Chicago Bears: The Mike Singletary-led defense didn’t give up a point in the playoffs until surrendering 10 in a 46-10 victory over the Patriots in the Super Bowl, exposing every opponent’s weaknesses along the way. Who knows how many opposing coaches that team caused to drop their pants?
1. 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers: Pittsburgh had great defenses throughout the ’70s. But the ’76 squad was the best, surrendering only 28 points in the final nine games of the season. If only the Three Rivers Stadium security was as tough to breach back then. Arrest that kid! He is in a players-only area!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer Now Online!
"I can guarantee you there are going to be surprises. David Benioff, who wrote the script, is one of the great writers in Hollywood, and he is the biggest comic book fan in the history of the world. There is not an issue of Wolverine or X-Men that he doesn’t own. When he first pitched me the idea, he had such a brilliant idea that was his little twist on events. He’s written it smartly. He knows what the fans want." - Hugh Jackman
And hinting at what direction a Wolverine sequel would take:
"The most intriguing thing to me was the Japan story. I love the Japan story. I wanted to do the Japan story from around X-Men 2. Can you just picture Wolverine in Japan with the triads and the samurai? It’s just genius. Comedically and dramatically, I thought, ’This is awesome!’ But how can you do that before you explain his origins? If we tried to mix the origin and Japan together, it wouldn’t do justice to either. So you can tell by the answer where I’d like it to go." - Hugh Jackman
Seems Hugh Jackman really appreciates interpreting the role of Wolverine. I’m quite sure there will a be Wolverine movie sequel. If the movie Wolverine 2 takes place in Japan that would be awesome: can you imagine samurai swords vs. adamantium claws?
New Species Discovered at The Greater Mekong
- Alice Walker
The Greater Mekong, which is made up of 600,000 square kilometres of wetlands and rainforest along the Mekong River in Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam and China, is also home to striped rabbits, bright pink millipedes laced with cyanide and a rat that was believed to have become extinct 11 million years ago.
A host of new species has been found in the area, which is so full of life that previously unknown animals and plants have been turning up at a rate of two a week for a decade.
At least 1,068 new species were identified in the Greater Mekong from 1997 to 2007 along with several thousand tiny invertebrates, the Times reports.
Annamite striped rabbits, or Nesolagus timminsi, with black and brown fur, were discovered in Vietnam and Laos in 2000 and are only the second species of striped rabbit to be identified.
Among the most bizarre to be discovered was a hot-pink, spiny dragon millipede, Desmoxytes purpurosea..
The millipedes have glands that produce cyanide to protect them from predators.
Scientists believe that the shocking-pink colouration is a warning that they would make a fatal snack. "They would do well to heed this warning," concluded a WWF report on the Greater Mekong discoveries.
A huntsman spider, named Heteropoda maxima, measured 30cm across and was found in caves in Laos. It was described as the "most remarkable" of 88 new species of spider located in Laos, Thailand and the Yunnan province of China.
Thomas Ziegler, curator at Cologne Zoo, was among the researchers to explore the Greater Mekong.
"It is a great feeling being in an unexplored area and to document its biodiversity for the first time, both enigmatic and beautiful," he told the paper. The discoveries documented in the WWF report First Contact in the Greater Mekong include 519 plants, 15 mammals, 89 frogs, 279 fish, 46 lizards, 22 snakes, 4 birds, 4 turtles and 2 salamanders. Stuart Chapman, the director of WWF’s Greater Mekong programme, said: "We thought discoveries of this scale were confined to the history books. This reaffirms the Greater Mekong’s place on the world map of conservation priorities."
Among the 15 mammals discovered in the region was the Laotian rock rat, Laonastes aenigmamus.
It was thought to have been extinct for 11 million years but a researcher spotted the corpse of one on sale in a food market in Laos in 2005.

They write, "Now it’s down to the final 5 Survivors: Bob, Matty, Kenny, Susie, and my favorite - Sugar! (me, too!) I can’t wait to see it all go down and I will have my fingers crossed tightly for my girl. It’s going to be very interesting how it all plays out."
Here are the votes for the winner of Survivor: Gabon - Bob. Susie. Susie. Susie. Bob. Bob.
The winner of Survivor: Gabon ??

BOB!!!!
Bob is the oldest winner ever in the history of the game. Bob says that he tried to be very friendly but tried to play the game as best he could. Jeff is grilling Bob on how the heck he constructed that fake idol and then says that he pulled his out of the fire from that now infamous tribal council. It was pretty impressive. The jury says that if Matty had won the fire making challenge, that 5 of them would’ve voted for him. He would’ve won this game had he taken Bob’s place in the final three!
Jeff bluntly asks how Susie made it so far in the game and she said that her social game took her far. He points out Randy for being the vote that put Bob over the edge to win and Randy says that he chose Bob because of the whole cookie incident. Sugar is asked what the reaction has been and she says she has to leave her house with makeup on because people are recognizing her and blogging about her.
Jeff plays Corinne’s comment from tribal council and she is booed by just about the entire audience. He calls it one of the worst things he’s ever heard in 17 seasons and she doesn’t show that much remorse. When she’s booed again, she says she loves it. What is going on? Marcus backs her up a little, saying that the audience didn’t see how frustrating Sugar really could be. Randy, who has also been quite difficult this season, says that he wasn’t always so bitter and negative. Jeff openly admits that when they tested the contestants, Marcus scored with the highest IQ and Randy was next. He once was a commercial airline pilot, engineering degree from Vanderbilt, and used to compete in marathons and iron man challenges. Huh?!
Yes, Jeff is calling out Crystal for her poor physical performance this season. She brought her Olympic gold medal just to prove to everyone that she is the real deal. Kenny says that gaming and Survivor are similar in that he used mind games and manipulation to get ahead. He admits that he was cocky. Ok good. He has self awareness. Okay, so some people thought Ace’s accent was fake? I never heard that. It’s legit, though. He was raised in London.
Bush 2-0 Iraqi Journalist (video)
Welcome to Baghdad. An Iraqi reporter set off pandemonium Sunday by hurling two shoes at President Bush during a news conference that was the centerpiece of his secret goodbye visit.
Bush was cool under fire and prevented an even bigger incident by waving off his lead Secret Service agent, who was prepared to extract him from the room.
Video shows the president’s lead agent rushing to the podium, but the president immediately and subtly motions to him that it’s OK. The agent backs off.
The president successfully ducked both throws. Photos show him with his head down near the top of the podium. The embarrassing incident marred a visit meant to show off the improved conditions since the troop "surge" dramatically reduced casualties to U.S. troops.
"This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog," the journalist shouted (in Arabic), Steven Lee Myers of The New York Times reported in a pool report to the White House press corps.
Myers reported that the man threw the second shoe and added: "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

Bradford wins Heisman Trophy
NEW YORK – The first person to congratulate Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford was the player who won it last year — Tim Tebow.
The star quarterbacks from the top two teams in the country shook hands Saturday night, then embraced. On Jan. 8, with the national championship on the line, it won’t be so cordial.
Bradford, Oklahoma’s amazingly accurate and quick-thinking passer, won the Heisman after leading the highest-scoring team in major college history to the BCS title game.A year after Tebow was the first sophomore to win the Heisman, Bradford became the second and kept the Florida star from joining Archie Griffin as the only two-time winners.
Bradford and Tebow will soon meet again, when the No. 2 Sooners (12-1) face No. 1 Gators (12-1) in Miami."We’re ready to get back to work to get ready for the 8th," Bradford said. "When we started this season, winning the national championship was the first goal we put down as a team."
Next month’s game between Oklahoma and Florida marks the second time Heisman winners will play against each other. The first was in the 2005 Orange Bowl, when ’04 winner Matt Leinart and Southern California beat ’03 winner Jason White and Oklahoma for the national title.Bradford, who leads the nation in touchdown passes with 48, received 1,726 points. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was second with 1,604 and Tebow — who received the most first-place votes — was third with 1,575 points.
"I was definitely surprised and I think it’s everything I imagined," said Bradford, who raised the 25-pound bronze statue with his left hand still in a cast from a recent surgery. "I think it will take a couple weeks to set in."Bradford got 300 first-place votes, McCoy 266 and Tebow 309. Not since 1956 had a player drawn the most first-place votes and finished third; Tommy McDonald of Oklahoma holds that distinction.
Bradford was the third person to win without receiving the most first-place votes, joining Notre Dame’s Paul Hornung in ’56 and Oklahoma’s Billy Sims in 1978.Any consolation, Tim?
"Not really," he said with a smile. "You lose, you lose."We still get to play in January and decide something a little bit bigger."
It was the closest margin between the top two since Nebraska’s Eric Crouch edged Florida’s Rex Grossman by 62 points in 2001. The only other time the gap between first and third was smaller was also ’01, when Miami’s Ken Dorsey was 142 points behind Crouch."Now I know what it’s like for those people on ’American Idol,’" McCoy said. "My heart was pounding."
The award ceremony was held at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. When it was over, the finalists were whisked downtown with a police escort, about 50 blocks to the Sports Museum of America in lower Manhattan for a news conference."I was really nervous," Bradford said during his news conference. "I’d much rather play in front of 100,000 people than wait for an award to be handed out."
The Big 12 South was the epicenter of college football this season, with both the national championship race and Heisman chase turning weekly on games played by its three powerhouse teams.McCoy was the early Heisman front-runner after leading the Longhorns to the No. 1 ranking with a victory against Oklahoma in October. Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell, who finished a distant fourth in Heisman voting, then moved to the forefront after he tossed a last-second, game-winning touchdown pass to beat Texas a month later.
But Bradford closed strongest, leading his team to a string of blowout victories, including one against Texas Tech, and a spot — even if it was somewhat controversial — in the BCS title game.Bradford leads the nation in passer rating (186.3) and has thrown for 4,464 yards, directing the Sooners’ fast-paced, no-huddle offense.
Oklahoma has already racked up 702 points to blow past the record of 656 set by Hawaii in 2006, and last week the Sooners became the first major college team in 89 years to score at least 60 in five straight games."This is an individual award but I feel like I’m receiving it on behalf of my teammates," Bradford said during his acceptance speech. "I feel like our whole offense bails me out every game. They make me look good."
Bradford is the fifth Oklahoma player to win the award, and second during coach Bob Stoops’ 10 seasons with the Sooners. Bradford matched White by taking home college football’s most famous bronze statue. Next he’d like to join Josh Heupel, his position coach and a Heisman runner-up, who quarterbacked OU to the 2000 national title."You were one of my heroes growing up," Bradford told Heupel.
Oklahoma has never won a national title and a Heisman Trophy in the same season. While no match for Tebow and McCoy as a runner, Bradford’s Heisman moment came on a scramble against Oklahoma State in the regular-season finale. He sprinted away from pressure, turned up the sideline and about 5 yards from the end zone tried to vault headfirst to the goal line. Bradford got hit and flipped, arms and legs whipping around, and landed hard out of bounds, but popped right up. On the next play, he sneaked into the end zone from a yard out.
He came out of that game with an injured non-throwing hand. The cast will be off well before the game against Florida. The winner that night in Miami gets the biggest prize of all.
